I picked up this terribly ugly rock in the Rio Grande foothills and even passed it around in the rock hound group to see if anyone had advice on whether to and how to cut it. It clearly was an agate, but appeared to have a large white crystal area in the middle. Here's the initial rock Imagine my surprise when I saw a significant number of dark inclusions in the first knub slabbed off so . . . I went further. The next was quite different from the first but both were especially distinct when backlit. Due to the irregular shape of the rock I've decided to stub it with Gorilla glue on a 2x2 and cut the rest of it in the near future. I would never have expected this much diversity from this meager rock. I'll post up all other slabs as they are finished. Here are most of the rest (not backlit) And backlit. -- This may be the final stub but Photobucket is gagging on me. Yes it was an agate wrapped around a white crystal. How many millions of years did it roll around to get into my saw vice? Just asking. Tom Thanks for enduring my elation. Tom

Though I like the cow knuckle, I like the slabs even better! Is that Montana Agate?

No rockhounder's pocket involved in this one, but if we go back far enough, the rock could have been moved south from Montano (long before the Rio Grande was formed). It clearly has the appearance of having rolled a long way and been traumatized on the way. Maybe it is a Montana from parts North. Tom

Nice slabs, you really turned a sow's ear into a silk purse.
