when you have a jones for your favorite food? Beef's earlier post about Alamo Lake jogged my memory and made me remember a trip there some years back. I'm still smiling at the thought of it... We were camped at the lake with some friends that used to live near Tucson years earlier. One of their favorite fast-food joints was Sonic, which at the time we didn't have any in the San Diego area. One day, they decided they had to have a Sonic fix, so we drove two large trucks, with two people and three dogs in each one, and drove 127 miles, 3 hours plus - EACH WAY - to go to the Sonic in Prescott. It was an all day affair. (Now our friends have a Sonic a couple miles from their house! I can't remember if the food was good or bad, but after the long drive, I was starving and probably would have eaten just about anything! The farthest I think I've ever gone, is less than 20 miles, but it involves crossing the border. We'd drive down to San Ysidro, park the car, and then walk across to Tijuana. We'd go to Tacos Perez, and have real Mexican style tacos. ¡Muy Rico! You could stuff yourself and leave a big tip, and it would only set you back less than five bucks. But, alas, we haven't been to TJ for years now, quit going when things got out of comtrol down there. Anyway, let's hear your story! Jean

As I'm sure I've mentioned before, I am like Whimpy and have a real thing for hamburgers. We have a couple of burger joints way out in the boonies. Mack and Ernies Roadside Grill in Tarpley, TX and the Alamo Springs Cafe out on the old Fredericksburg- San Antonio Road that have outrageously fine burgers. Fortunately, we like bat watching and the Alamo Springs joint is right by the Bat Tunnel Park. Mack and Ernies is not far from my wife's favorite native plant nursery so both of those are good excuses to drive an hour or so for the great burgers. Mac and Ernies by the way has Axis ( sometimes) and Blackbuck burgers which are really good.
Alamo Springs has one of those giant burger contests too and a really funny sign that says something like, "If you want fast food, there's the door and Frederickburg is ten miles that way."....Mel
PS: Sonics here in Texas have great foot long dogs!

The nearest fast food jont to us is 10 miles. If we want a decent meal, it's 25 miles. We don't eat out a lot.
To the question at hand, I've never driven out of my way for food. Just not a big food person.

500 miles for crab bisque, steamed cherry stone clams and a dozen number one Chasapeake Bay steamed crabs at The Harbor House in Elkton Md! Oh yes and steak fries with their signature Chesapeske Bay seasoning!

I used to go out of my way for two places,
1) Rutts Hut in Clifton for their their Rippers and Chili no beans
2) White Mana in Jersey City for their burgers with fried onions
Of course that was usually after the bars closed...those days are long gone (and these places were just a few miles in any direction)
I still have one guilty pleasure, KFC original recipe, darkmeat chicken; I love that coating, and it will probably kill me. Luckily I only have it on long car trips when the miles are piling up and I get the craving.
