Pretty cool, James! ;D Hilarious that you didn't believe your friend.
From what I've read on the site, it's off limits to the public? I have seen pics of geology students at the location.
I have a beautiful piece of shocked quartz from the Wetumpka meteorite site that I traded with rocks2dust (Kevin). It's sparkly!
I'll try to post a pic of it.

Found a couple of pics of the Wetumpka shocked quartz specimen I posted on the OA forum for the "Guess the Stone" contest. close up shot of shocked quartz from the Wetumpka meteorite site Shocked Quartz from the Wetumpka meteorite site in Wetumpka, Alabama Here's the thread from the OA forum "Guess the Stone" contest with some tidbits of info on the site. forums.opalauctions.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=2709&start=2910#p44434Wetumpka Meteroite Impact Crater in Wetumpka, Alabama "Located only a dozen miles north of Montgomery (a couple of hours from LaGrange where we live ), in the City of Wetumpka, is an ancient meteor crater over twice as large as the famous Barringer Crater near Flagstaff Arizona." I think that guessing any thing related to meteorites is tricky to identify Jan.I see you gave them a lot of clues. It may have never been figured out w/out those clues.Great guess it rock. There is a about a 200 foot wide mowed easement for utilities running east/west that allows great topograghical views.A lot of roads all thru the crater.A very expensive subdivision in the crater. It is interesting to drive around that area.Just the gravel roads on top of every high spot in the area are a testimant to the distrubution of round pebbles. Many borrough pits are on the hills where the pebbles are being dug.And the clay badlands are visible all over from your vehicle. I was curious about shocked quartz. Now i know what it looks like.I wonder what meteorite(actually asteroid at this size)parts they found.Maybe the experts can ID them. But the drive thru that area is a large part of experiencing the this crater. All this is amazing. Thanks for the great add on.

Thanks, James!! Wow, didn't know there was a subdivision and roads going through some areas of the site.
