Found in a bunch of Illinois "field stones". Hard, an agate chip won't scratch it. lighter colored side chiseled side & some chips close up to show patterns

That's stromatolite, or fossilized algae. Nice find!

Yup, Stromatolite. Got a couple big hunks ready for slabbing in the spring. Looks like the material coming out of Wyoming.

Those are real nice. Those were found in Illinois? I got it from a contractor who works here in Illinois. He has a rock pile behind his house of stuff brought home from job sites. He gave us a bunch of rocks we used to do some landscaping. He only works locally so I assumed it was native. I just checked the ISGS web site and it doesn't list stromatolite as a common Illinois fossil. Its entirely possible some one brought home from out west and it eventually ended up in my friends rock pile.

It doesn't look anything like the stromatolite that I find here in north central Wyoming. The swirls are much bigger here and pretty bland. I would love to find some of that stuff. Jim

Jim, it is amazing that given enough time etc that some slimy gooey things can actually turn into something pretty! Your fossilized sewer monsters are a good example

I get nice silicified algae with the coral. There is often a layer of it on top of the coral 1-1.5 inches thick. It is attractive and silicified out of the same silica that silicifies the coral. It is similar to those oil agates from the California coast after tumbling.I need to start collecting it.I never realized it had a following.I am happy for you Mrs Pat... That material is sweet tkvancil.

Here's a few pics of some stromatolites/algae, hope you don't mind me adding these here. The are really cool, and usually take a really nice shine. First cab from a slab I purchased, so don't know where it was found. [img src="[http://i525.photobucket.com/albums/cc333/jeanatrandjproductsdotcom/ROCKS/Fossils/DSC10471A.jpg"] This is the stuff more typically found in the local desert But this was also found locally. Rough Cab Who knew algae could be so cool? Jean

Jean, your cabs are lovely. I didn't realize algae could be cabbed without crumbling. Your last samples look like they would be eager to do so--- but did not. Good to know. Thanks!
