I was just wondering if anyone has tried a hot glue gun instead of a dop wax. I don't have any dop wax yet and when I did my first cab the other night, I used super glue. Worked okay and I put it in the fridge before I popped it off. Saw that trick on Youtube and tried it. Worked okay. But, I was just wondering if hot glue would work too? I haven't read any thing on it so maybe its pointless? Eventually I'll order some wax also.

Haven't tried hot glue that way. My concern would be would it hold considering the pressure it would have to withstand. Normal use of a glue gun does not involve any pressure.
If you try it, I'd be interested in hearing the results.

Okay....I'll try it...what the heck. I'll let you know how it goes. They have different types of glue sticks for the heat gun so maybe I can find one that works good.

My brother has tried it with mixed results. One of the problems is how rubbery the glue holds the stone, the other problem it some of the brands of hot glue simply don't grip many of the stone surfaces. Wax or super glue hold tight. a gob of hot glue is like the stick, flexible.
you can try it, but you will find wax a much more reliable hold when dopping.

Hi All,
I use hot glue almost exclusively. My dops are wooden dowels, I heat the stone and apply the glue sparingly. I find that when redopping to polish the back of the cab that the adhesion to the polished surface can be troublesome.
Regards
Rob

Rob, which glue stick do you use? Pintoblades says there are more than one kind, too.

Thanks all, I am definitely getting some wax but I'll give the glue a shot too. Sounds like Robert has a good result with it for the most part.

I use aluminum dops with cheap 5 minute epoxy. I heat the dops with a propane torch to remove. freezer would probly work too but takes longer.

I use wooden dops, drilled, with screws or nails inserted into the ends. The metallic heads provide platforms for cyanoacrylate "super" glue. A soak in a small jar of acetone, and the stone is released. No more heat, and no more rocks flying off the dop. No more wax. Period.
