Doing some cutting lately of finds from last summer. I gotta say, from Lavic, the success ratio is like 80% . . . if you had to choose one best rock hounding site, that would be it. Lavic: On this one, the black is metallic, prolly hematite I guess: Also I just noticed the giant fracture, oops. Last Chance Canyon: Huh, I guess I didn't slab as many of the Last Chance rocks as I thought I did - mostly just faced them I guess. I do remember thinking, "Wow, I didn't know this stuff was this good!". Good place to go hounding.

I guess this is from the trip you posted? Sweet stuff and the brecciated blood is way cool. I find blood red stone here but it is not as beautiful as your stone. Jim

Bout got my 10" saw cleaned up and ready to go. Need to start slabbing the 2 boxes of Lavic Larry sent to me. Messy stuff to cab, but makes beautiful cabs. Think I still have a little red mud around my fingernails from the last Lavic cabs, 18 years ago. lol

Excellent slabs Susan! I never get tired of looking at Lavic Jasper and I concur, you never get skunked at Lavic and you never now what you'll find. My favorite from your grouping is that last red breccia. That one is sweet! You're correct too, lots of hematite in Lavic jasper specimens. I cut a weird one the other day where the little breccia chunks each had a little halo of metallic hematite around the edge. Fun material to slab!.....Mel

Yeah, I like that one best too Mel. It's pretty hard to find the ones with the blueish agate/quartz in between the brekker these days. Tip for newbies: It looks like yellow crusty stuff on the outside where it weathers. I kicked myself when I first cut one of the yellow crusty ones and realized THAT's where the blue quartzy/agate stuff is . . . I left a lot of those on the ground the first couple trips! Aw cmon Don, ya gotta keep a fingernail brush in the shower! ;-) And wear gloves. Larry's and my saw snot is always red . . . I don't think I've ever even seen saw snot that wasn't red! Jim, these are from various trips. I think I posted about most of them though. ;-)

Susan. The problem is most folks go to the wrong place at Lavic. They go south of the new RR tracks. Best collecting I used to have ( I gave Lowell the location so don't know how it is now) is north of the tracks. You just go out route 66 until you hit Lavic Road, take the road south past the junky old ruins to the new RR tracks, turn left (east) on the RR frontage road and go a mile or maybe a bit more or less. Should be a big brushy ravine. Huge jasper bed running north towards Hwy 40 from the frontage road and lots more eroding from the ravines in the area. It will be on a terrace to your left. You should be able to see all the small jasper pieces shining in the sun....Mel

Sweet finds, Susan! The Mojave desert always satisfies, and Lavic is just the best. Great rock!

Looks like you found some of that mossy stuff at Last Chance.
Your Lavic material rocks!! That area has always been a good place to dig.
On a side note, I found out that I just didn't take us out far enough on that one road to find the correct turn off for the Christmas Tree Agate area......maybe next time.

Naah, Christopher, none of this batch of LCC was mossy; that's just jasp-ag that looks kind of mossy in the photo. ;-)
I still want to go find that xmas tree stuff! It's almost warm enough for rockhounding out there . . .
Thanks all!
