I was bummed that nobody else was able to switch to Saturday to meet up at Flint Ridge but we still had a great adventure.
This was our first time there but probably not our last. My older son did a lot of surface collecting and really liked all the stuff that had crystal pockets while my younger son and myself got down in the pits and used the pick, sledge hammer and chisels to get some cutting rough. I was able to find a cool stop that was not to far out of the way for the trip home and that ended up being the highlight of the trip for everyone. We stopped at Seneca cave and from what the guide told us it is know as the caviest cave tour in the USA. The tour takes you down 110 feet below surface and there are only hand rails in two places for about 10 feet each and no stairs anywhere. There are multiple spots that have 4ft ceilings that you have to crouch through and the whole climb down is natural wet slippery rocks. As you go down they stop to show all the layers of earth like limestone,flint/chert then dolomite. There is also a river at the very bottom and I guess in 1960 someone put a bottle and note in it and 4 yrs later it was found in a lake 20 miles away.
Here's some pics from Nether's farm - Ms. Nethers was home and we got to spend about a half hour talking to her. she actually came out and weighed the stuff with us.
seneca cavern
This is a fossil that was found after the layer that contained brachipods and trilobites to they figure its over 400 million years old but they did not know what it is. Its about 10" long
Here's what we brought home (I think it ended up being about 160 pounds)
first slab cut today and first cab cut today.
This was a real cool piece with a large crystal on it that my son found on the ground as we were packing to go home.
Thanks for looking,
Chuck, Andrew and Darren
