How about opalized wood ( wood opal) It's much more brittle and tends to fracture more than agatized wood and sure has the look of your pics. I find a few pieces of it every time I hit George West for wood...Mel

I'm inclined to agree although it isn't brittle and I found it at Green River, UT, not exactly a place I would expect to find wood. Maybe someone threw it in the desert just to tease whoever found it.
