If you want classic variscite, then that is not "high grade". I get that.
If you like out of the ordinary & beautiful examples of stuff, this is awesome grade! Is it solid?

Yes, for the most part it is very solid. Occasional cracks in the larger pieces but tel you the pieces I had to chip off the walls of the wash were definitely solid. And in one piece I was cutting down at the rock club the saw starting squealing and locked up when the blade hit the center of the rock. Don't know what it hit in the center but it was definitely hard and left some burn marks from the blade. I gave that sample away to one of the club members to see what they could find out but all they got back to me was that it was variscite. Still don't know what the reddish inclusions in the stone are either. I have not done much with the pieces yet though other than cutting a few and lapping them a little. I just started cabbing so I have been practicing with softer stone.

Actually, that descriptions sounds like a lubrication failure.
Glad to know it is relatively solid.

i agree .. where did you collect it .. Nye County, Nevada. Unfortunately it is getting too hot here to get out and collect. It is supposed to get up to 117F in a few days. So it will likely be fall before I can go get more unless we get another cool down to 100F or lower. I only found it in one canyon, but followed the canyon up in Google Earth and think I located a very large deposit.

Actually, that descriptions sounds like a lubrication failure. Glad to know it is relatively solid. The head of the shop that day took a look at it and could not figure it out either. We tried backing the stone up a little and it did the same thing when it hit that spot again. No other rocks being cut on that saw gave us any problems. So it remains a mystery.
