My new motor for my Qt12 rotary tumbler just arrived from the Rock Shed. Unfortunately, one of the bags of 220 grit I ordered developed a small hole in transit and grit was all over the inside of the box. The motor was wrapped in newspaper and yes, upon blowing into the motor, some grit blew out. I'm going to vacuum it out next.
So, advice please... should I call Shawn and send it back for an exchange, or will it be okay to go ahead and use the motor?

Me personally, I'd send it back. You know Shawn would have no problem with sending you a new one. You might be safe if you blow it out really well, but why take the chance? The only thing worse than 220 grit in the motor is 80 grit in the motor! Definitely not conducive to long motor life. Jean

I would definitely send it back. That grit will be the devil in wearing out bearings and bushings, etc. JM2CW - Mark

I agree about sending it back but I'd call Shawn first and explain the situation. I'm sure he will agree. I put him near the same level as Tony for customer service.

Okay, I talked to Shawn. He had no problem taking it back, but said that if he did, he would just blow it out with an air compressor. He was happy to extend the warranty to two years for me, doubling the existing one year. I decided to keep it and take it to my neighbor who will blow it out for me tonight, and we'll see how it goes.

Sounds like a good plan with the extended warranty. Make sure the person blowing it out uses good safety glasses to avoid getting 220 grit in their eyes.

Bought it 2 1/2 years ago, was reconditioned and highly discounted at the Rio Grande store. My old motor isn't dead, but I'm gonna see if I can take it apart and give it a good cleaning. That'll be the next advice thread I start, LOL.
