Several years ago I bought some black stone from Namibia sold as natural black onyx. It sat around until I needed some jet black material for doublet backing. After a couple of slabs I realized the stuff isn't black chalcedony. It's dense black in some areas but has occasional spots of red jasper and filaments of a metallic material that looks a bit like the shine of Crown of Silver psilomelane. It cuts interesting cabs and the slab pictured shows the filament growth. Here's a different view of the quick cab I cut from it. Enjoy the reflections of my dining room light, the window and the camera: I also decided to get "down and dirty" with some Koroit ironstone opal. The stuff is very messy to cut but it can yield some nice stones, I think. And a long pendant piece:

Nice opals! Don't worry about the mess, that's just healing Aussie mud. Do enough and you'll notice your hands take on a manicured look..except for the wheel burns and ground down nails, lol. T

Hi Tony, LOL, I like your avatar. Nice to meet another opal fancier. I've cut more than a few Aussie mud opals so this isn't my first rodeo. As for wheel burns, I haven't had any fingerprints since 1980
