I recently tripped onto a site on the Rio Puerco with a large variety of types of petrified wood. Thought I'd share a few of the most striking. This piece has a striking yellow streak and various browns. Another slab with yellow. The central grey area of this piece may be highlighted in a cab. A small piece, but clearly palm. Other side of palm fragment. This is clearly curved grain around a stem/knothole. Apologies for focus. But such curves look like this on the inside (once cut) this is a heel (thin slice) that has been tumbled a bit and glued onto a money clim, but the contrast was evident on the ground. This is the inside of that heel, if I recall correctly.
More colors
Same chunk Another knot heel piece. The reds don't photograph well but here's one example. and another. I thought this was wood when I cut it. ?? I hope this stimulates a few folks to cut into some of those pieces of wood that show a bit of color on the outside. There may be real color underneath. Thanks for looking. Tom

Great wood, Tom. Looks like you found a nice spot! I really like the yellows, and the knots, too. Thanks for sharing. Jean

Thanks for posting that Tom. Petwood is one of my favorites. To cut or not to cut a limb is a tough decision as sometimes the outside is fantastic too. Just a brief tumble and it pops. But you definitely got it right on those. Thanks, Mark

I really like that first piece as well. Looks like a lot of it is limonite (iron hydroxide)with agate.
