Just picked up a set of diamond toppers from Ameritool for my 8" flat lap - 325, 600 and 1200 mesh, plus polishing pad and tube of 14K diamond compound. Has anybody else purchased these recently? I installed all of them on my backing plates, and used them for the first time yesterday. I don't know if they got in a bad batch or what, but my old disks were cutting better than these are. It seems they have very little diamond dust on them, and the 80 mesh was burnishing the slabs instead of cutting them. Very curious. I'm going to give them a call in a little bit, and see what's up with that.
I certainly don't recall a problem with the last replacements I got.

I just ordered a bunch, too. Well, it was my first order. Anyway, yeah, I am not impressed. The red one especially is CRAP! It rubs red off onto the stone. Yeah, it just smears rubber off. WTH? I thought I just didn't know what I was doing. But, I know I wasn't doing anything wrong.
Just yesterday, I ordered an 80 grit. I am so hoping it is not bad!

Tela, I used the brown one, the 325, and within a couple hours, it was basically worthless! Then I used the red one (600 grit) on just ONE STONE and had seen enough to know that it wasn't cutting it - literally! Unless the 80 grit topper you're getting is a metal one (don't know if they make the 80 in sandpaper), I doubt it would be any better. And that's if they haven't changed sources for the metal toppers. It's possible they suck now, too. I will be contacting them shortly, and let them know at least two of their customers are not happy! I can't even work any stones right now, I am so bummed.
I'm certain that they must be getting complaints about the new toppers, how could they not? Can't believe that if they are getting complaints, they'd continue to ship them out?? Will let you know what I find out.

Thanks Jean. Since I just purchased my Ameritool, I wasn't too sure what to expect. Now, I think it sounds like at least one of my discs is just not very good. For the 80 this is what I got. I wasn't too sure about getting this or the metal one, but this was a much better deal even with the master plate, so this is what I got. www.kingsleynorth.com/skshop/product.php?id=88633&catID=90

I've not purchased from Kingsley yet. The last set of "other than Ameritool" diamond disks I got, I picked up in Quartzsite from Inland Lapidary. Easily half the price! The original ones, and the last set of replacement ones I got from Ameritool were fine, no problems with them.
Okay, here goes nothing. Giving them a call now.

Tela, I just called them. Found out that they are the manufacturers of the sanding disks, they have not changed the ingredients or process, and that they are buying from the same distributors. She doesn't know what is going on, why the 325 is not cutting. She is going to send me another one to try, and then I'll give her some feedback.
One thing I will say about Ameritool, they have great customer service, and want to keep their customers happy and coming back for more!

Sweet! Think I'll have to call them. I was just working on a coral cab and sure enough- I hit the 600 and no matter what I do, the red rubs off on the stone. So, I have to get some acetone out and clean off the rock before I get the next disc out or I will contaminate it. PITA.
