Looks like obsidian week on here with Julies fine batch a couple days ago.I wasn't going to mess with ob again, but had a lot of scrap from slabbing, trying to knap, and end cuts. This was a different method I tried.I ran a 12lb barrel in one coarse charge for 27 days. Then went to 2 Loto loads in 1000,4 days, and ao polish,3 days. The batch Ihad some large chunks in the load. These ended up frosted,I guess from banging against each other in the 12lb barrel.Surprisingly, all the small pieces and slabs weren't frosted. Snowflake, again some frosting on the large pieces. These slabs are from Tonys Davis Creek Tears, small for cushioning. Overall, pleased with it,even with the frosting on the large pieces, can work on them later. Thanks for your time. snuffy

Those came out looking real good. I guess this is obsidian month. Lowell gave me enough apache tears for a batch so I have them in the rotary right now. I had me enough tin oxide left for a batch so decided I'd give them a shot and see if I could make them come out as well as the last batch I tried. Usually I mess up obsidian so two good batches in a row would be something special for me *L*.....Mel

That is my experience Snuffy. Big rocks frost more. Got to run them slow or have barrel fuller than normal.
Makes sense. Tiny rocks can not beat each other and can be run very fast.
They are fine and wide variety

Nice variety in that purty batch. Obsidian is one of those stones, along with labradorite that gives me fits. Seeing evidence from your batch that it ain't impossible to be successful is reassuring.

I gots a question... I have about 20 or so pounds of Apache Tears and lots of OB in different flavors..... Is Cerium good for polish, or, as I saw above, Tin Oxide better for polishing?? more curious than anything... I even have some AO polish floating around here somewhere.
Also curious about Snuffy's tumbling procedure.. you did 1 charge of course grit and left it to break down to finer grits for as opposed to changing grits in the normal progression??

Mario,I just let the one 60/90 charge break down over the 27 days in the rotary. snuffy

Snuffy, I always like your posts / photos. I'm used to seeing your pet wood. Nice job on the obsidian. I like the smaller tears. The snowflakes are sweet.

Is it really obsidian month in central TX? I've been cutting a bunch of slabs of rainbow obsidian that I got from Tony. It's amazing the clarity of the "stripes" on the slabs. The guys from OR seem to poo pah Obsidian but I kinda like it. Of course, I poo pah flint and they like that. Go figure.
