Not really sure what we'll be doing for $ in the future when you can push a button and get whatever you want I guess that's why the gov't considers it a disruptive technology. Even if they tried banning it the genie is out of the bottle the concept might be genius but the machine itself could probably be built by any tech person. In other words an easy to figure out machine that produces mind boggling results. I've read China is going to print an entire building with giant printers. Of course rather it will be occupied or not is another story.

3D printing is fascinating. I bought a pendant made that way. Awesome!

the patents on the stereolithograhy process are expiring soon. I am told there are literally dozens of companies poised to bring that to your office or local office supply store.

3d printers will revolutionize jewelry design prototyping for small scale jewelers. Design a model, print out a 3d wax model, make a mold and cast it.

Don, I researched that two years ago. They are already doing it, but were asking huge numbers. Like $150 to print a 20mm pendent I had the design for. Filling the mold with 14k gold was only going to cost $175!
When somone offers a small home machine that will print wax, then we are in bidness.

you can print wax, but I think they will manage to print directly in gold or silver.

There's a local club around here called 'hacker space', or 'makers lab' that has several types of laser 3d printers. There's a lot of hackerapaces in the US, even more worldwide, just google.
Members can use the 3D printer and whatever gear they want. They have the OMFG types of equipment, and it's usually a geek club that builds things like robots and rockets for fun. Odds are good there's one in your city... these are the guys you wanna know if bad things happen. LOL!

My model was not moldable. It had to be printed one off for every piece.

I bought one of these from the artist in gold plate. But she didn't understand size in a pendant. What I got was very heavy and big. Unconfortable to wear.

"this is my bottle opener. It's a klein bottle opener."
Haha...........try opening a few beers and then read the description of that again that's hard enough sober.
Also.......I think when you said 'we're in business'........only at the onset. What if this progresses to the point of public machines in places like Walmart for people that can't afford their own machine and these public machines will either take your own code card you download off the net or they will have an inventory of say 1 million different items and jewelry is just one topic. Good bye silversmith.

I just bought one of these today, not sure if mine is the same brand: www.panthervision.com/cat-94-2-15/powercap.htmMuch more convenient than the separate LED straps and esp good for people like me that spend a lot of time in the dark and often wear a ballcap. This is the ultimate redneck hi-tech. Just looked, it is a Panther. Not sure if others make them or not. I'm waiting for it to get good and dark i'm gona go try it shortly.
