I found it on the maidens beach, ayrshire. I found some similar rocks, but the non-translucent rock covering it is more intact.

It isn't a fairburn then because they only come from the Dakotas here. Maybe you get to name it. lol Jim

It's a fine fortification agate that's been naturally tumbled by ocean wave action. It looks a lot like American Fairburns and other fine banded agates from around the world. I've seen similar stones from Argentina. Scotland has some beautiful agates. Keep up the searches.

Not a Fairburn, but a very nice Scottish agate.

I have about 7 other stones that have a similar coating to this one, but not as exposed. I am now trying to decide the best way to cut them, given their small size. This is the "best" so far, for those wo are interested, just hope I can find bigger ones. www.flickr.com/photos/hd-qld/9615435511/

Some bigger ones like that would be awesome.
Are you a professional photographer? I hope you do not mind but I looked at about 100 of your photographs and love the black and white. You are very good at composition and lighting. I really enjoyed looking at them. I used to shoot black and white before the digital came along. I do not have a place to process the film and I do not know if there are any commercial places that do it any more in this country.
Good luck with your rock hounding. Jim

Hi Jim,
thanks for the compliment! I'm an enthusiastic amateur, and like you, am a big fan of black and white. I just love 35mm Neopan from Fuji. I develop them myself, but if i want prints I send the negs off. We have a few places here in the UK that still do that. Illford is still going strong. In saying that, I do have (and use) digital a lot. Am actually in the process of selling two lenses so I can fund a new one!!
If you are in the US, there are a few places that still provide that service. The "I Shoot Film" group on flickr has regular updates about who and where still develops/prints 35mm in the US/Canada.
