Heading to Savannah and Charleston
Any notable side trips for rockhounds in that area?

If you can get into the area, check channel dredging piles near the Kings Bay Naval Base. Lots of shark teeth and other fossils to be found.

I a great spot for you and it is beautiful. Stony Bluff Landing on the Savannah River near the town of Girard Georgia. You can collect straight out of the dirt road. It is Savannah River Agate that you can find. www.flickr.com/photos/67205364@N06/sets/72157632569773602/I collected those early this year. Easy pickens but real hot. I can help you. let me know. The material is on River Road. A great deal of it is heat treated by ancient man. Interesting place. To me a phenomena.

I love collecting the Savannah River Agate! there are some AWESOME colors! It is on of those places where you do not have to look for the rocks they are EVERYWHERE! Keith
James, I have been hearing the rumors about them paving the road again have you heard anything?

No i have not. i tell you Kevin that place was great 25 years ago. There were boulders the size of washing machines. And no rules about trespass.
It does not surprise me though. They have had a lot of visitors. It is also beautiful there.

Charlie. Amelia Island is a destination that has shark teeth right on the beach. The north end of the island is often being built up w/dredgings that Don mentioned above. They build the beaches up. They erode away and the dredge material is used to build the beaches back up. It is miles of public beach that you can collect on. It can be very productive when they are pumping or after storms. The pump is a 16 cylinder diesel powered 36 inch monster about as big as a small house. You may be able to google -sharks teeth at amelia-dredge at amelia www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g34341-i684-k3465300-Looking_for_shark_teeth_hunting_tips-Amelia_Island_Florida.htmlIt is written in snowbird language just for you Charlie(Gotta take a stab at you snowbirds). We have to train you guys.

Thanks for the tips - have not gone yet just a few weeks away
Don - I'll look into access in that area
James and Keith - looks promising - nice color - The trick might be to find pieces with little to no pitting As the USA gets more people and more private and less Government land it gets harder to go to the old places. Imagine what it will be like in the future
Amelia Island and sharks teeth might be fun. combin a beach with collecting something I've never collected before

The public road is full of the stuff. No concern about private land there at the Savannah River. And the beaches on Amelia have been piked at for 200 years and that will continue. Florida is proud to have collectors on their beaches.
