Mel, in college, you have even more elective choices than HS for most programs. No one makes kids take the subjects you listed. They can CHOOSE those subjects, among many others, that focus on their majors. However, I agree that making kids choose a lot of electives proves that they did not need so many classes to begin with, so it IS about money.

Helen, Yep, it's about the money and the teachers that need supporting. For my four year degree there were elective classes all right for those within my major but there was also a large general education requirement which was required for your degree ( PE, History, English, arts, sociology, psych etc). You had choices in these outside your major classes but much as 2/3 of these were useless to you in your field of study. Mine was General Biology with emphasis on marine and wildlife biology, geology/oceanography minor emphasis and there were plenty of in field electives I could have added to my degree had I not had to pay for and sit in classes for like 130 quarter units of crap that had nothing to do with my field of interest or future empoyment.....Mel

In the present condition of this country i would be very cautious about my career path. Actually i would have no idea.
So many failed areas and disciplines. I go to Walmart and Home Depot and get helped by mostly professional people that are happy to have a job.People that were in a professional job. People that owned their own contracting business.
Would be interesting to see the unemployment rate for Doctors Accountants Engineers Biologists Real estate agents etc etc
10 % (or whatever it is)unemployment is very much deceptive. Best study something you can have a job in.
Just saying that unemployment amongst blue collar is not pretty.
Atlanta seems a more depressed area than most albeit . So a grad may have to move to an area he can find employment.
I think 75% of my class took jobs that made them move from Atlanta. Is that worth it??? Leaving friends and family...
Requires a lot of investigation.

Well, as I recall, Atlanta is unusual in that it grew soooo fast and soooo big. It didn't really have the strong employment base to explode the way it did, similar to Orlando. So when the economy shrinks, these areas tend to be punished the most, and some of the population must move away again.
As for your list, most of that list are self-employed or contract based employment. I don't think there's an easy way to estimate unemployment for that level of professionals. As for Doctors... there's no way in hell a Doctor will ever be unemployed:).

Yep. Atlanta is depressed. I hear and see other areas doing well. I think a lot of doctors are unable to have their dreams fulfilled like having their own practice. No, they are not unemployed but they are not happily employed. And many do not make the income you would expect.
In general though. I see college educated folks on salaries working long hours and down sized companies and being basically taken advantage of.
And the corporate people are what i was referring to. Many working at not their targeted jobs. Or lessor than their training.
But you have a much more positive outlook than i do. So we would go back and forth.

Yep, no way a doctor would ever be unemployed but under Obamacare, a heck of a lot of them are going for early retirement *L*.
Love those crooked unemployment statistics. Administration is crowing about unemployment going down to 7.3%. Another damn lie as they fail to tell us another 500,000 workers quit looking for jobs and dropped out of the workforce. Since the rate of unemployment they use takes into account only those looking for work, it looks like the rate went down when it did not, and is actually well over 10%. Won't be long till we're like socialist Europe where unemployment is really really bad.....Mel

Mel, the jobs being created are low paying, minimum wage type of jobs. It's a needed area too, because sad as it is, college students just getting out of school who cannot find work in their degrees can at least help pay their way living in their parents basement.
What we NEED is to revitalize our manufacturing base, and start taxing the corporations the same rate employees are taxed at. While you call it Socialism, the biggest reason for the boom during the 1950s, the rise of the middle class, was caused by the 92%-96% top tax rate. At that rate, the white picket fence was a reachable dream for millions of American families. It is not today.
No one is suggesting that Corporations again be taxed 96%. But 35% minimum given our economy is not unreasonable. ESPECIALLY since the more excess profit the Corporations have, the more they are spending to buy Politicians.

We are in bad shape Helen. It is obvious. And any post that goes up is challenged with what i think is your distorted opinion.
You have a distorted view that i do not understand other than you love to argue. That is certainly your right.

Well, I'm willing to listen to your view. All you've done is complain about Obama. Obama can't run again.
If you could be President of the US, James, what would you do to turn the economy around? And think through your assertions and the long term consequences of each action.

First and foremost i like to look at reality.
I am certain we are in the down cycle of a very powerful and rich democracy.
So i would first define the situation we are in.
I would probably remove you as an advisor so i could be advised by people that are realistic.
Then i would appoint you in charge of the cats.
Then i would take many from this rock forum and appoint them to the most powerful positions.

Must ponder that answer... very realistic. I especially like being in charge of the cats:).
