Was watching the news this morning, and they had on a story about Elton John performing at a Liberace tribute (to be broadcast Sept 22) at the Emmys. One of the two regular anchors is out right now, most likely on vacation, so they had one of their street reporters fill in for him. I about fell off the couch when she read her teleprompter and said phonetically "Libber ace". C'mon, people, you're in the news business, you should know the celebrities, I'd think? Hard to say how old this gal is, but would have thought she'd know who Liberace was.
It doesn't instill much confidence in the talking heads that do the broadcast news. I think she needs to be sent back down to the minors...

she's too young. Mr. Ace has been dead too long for his phonetically incorrect name to be easily said by Georgetown students.

*L* My favorite one's are the pretty blonde reporters who ask a wounded vet, " Wow, how did it feel to get shot/blown up etc?" I just wish one vet would say, "It hurt like hell you stupid blonde bimbo! How the hell do you think it felt?".....Mel

Maybe the folks that type the words into the teleprompter should take that kind of stuff into consideration, and spell it out phonetically so they can pronounce it! I get it that newbies to the area will mispronouce strange (usually Spanish) street names or places (Jamacha, El Cajon), but I would have never thought someone would not know who Liberace was. Maybe if they had put a photo of him in her teleprompter next to his name? Naw, she probably wouldn't have gotten that, either.
I think I watch the broadcast news as much for entertainment as enlightening these days. In my spare time...
