I recieved a call from my Nephew to ID some rocks that our Grandneice(Kinze)(age 10) had found in the back yard of her Granny Huff.... Granny Huff is my Sis In Law,they just moved to this proprty last fall-so I'm thinking an old rockhounder use to live there years ago. These rocks were buried abit,so she had to work at digging them out! I ID'ed all of them, but this one here really "POPS",it looks like a Hampton Butte Petrified Wood,or some type of Jade... Its really dence and heavy for the size it is....The green is dark and smooth to the touch.... I'll post this pic,I have two more at different angles, but my "photobucket" needs a diaper change....(Rolling eyes).. Thanks for your input...

Bigger original image would help. Looks too glassy for jade, but weight is also considered. Can you try to chip a flake off? If you can flake it, not jade. There is a sinular air bubble in the lower middle face. Does Jade ever have air bubbles? Kinze is a star and needs a rock pick Hey! Great Uncle Mike - Xmas is near! lol.... Get her the pick, take her hunting. Feed her fresh caught fish, it's good for the mind and soul.

Can't make the image bigger(Computer problems)...As for the rock, she took it and has it hid from everyone-LOL She found lots of Jaspers(all colors),some agates and crystals too..But as said this one really caught my eye... If petwood or maybe some type of Jade,I just need to get it ID'ed and an average net worth on it...

Well, then, Kinze needs a little girls version of your homemade!
Tell her that her distant long lost uncle/cousin/friend @shotgunner said she should have it but only if she promised to go rock hounding with great uncle mike! (an not bean her siblings with it!)

It really looks like a Washington translucent nephrite that Mel sent to me. If you hold a thin edge up to a bright light does it sort of glow? I have Wyoming nephrite that has lines and layers. I believe there is such a thing as jade/nephrite wood just like there is opal wood but I am not sure on that. The way you said it feels heavy also leads me to believe it is nephrite/jade. The heavy weight of nephrite is very obvious when you pick it up. Hold it side by side with a similar sized rock and see how it feels then. Or send a small piece of it to me and I will SG it.
How hard is it? If it is a little softer than jasper it could be (frickin memory, I can not think of the name) the other green rock that is about a five and has a lot of asbestos in it. I seem to have a lot of those "other green rocks".
The test Scott mentioned is a good indicator too. Unless you hit it just right it is difficult to chip a small piece off of it. A good way to do that is with a hammer and chisel so you can hit it really close to the edge. Well, if you are more accurate than me just a hammer will work. lol I can hit my hand clear on the other side of the rock and I have done a lot of rough carpenter work. I was soooo glad when I could afford a nailer. Jim

The weight is there, thats a given, compared to similiar rocks its size!!It does have a glow too..........As said,I have seen alot of rock, but never seen anything as this Jim.....Ok,if its "nephrite/jade",whats the net worth for a piece like that???(Rough idea....) If I buy it from her,I want to give her the fair face value and a happy face...Thumbs up Heck, she might have the rockhounders bite and keep it too! LOL

The last I saw a couple of years ago in a gold or gem magazine classified ad a guy in south Wyoming was selling nephrite for $15 a pound. Nephrite/jade from somewhere else I do not have a clue. I know if it is real jade it is worth much more. I was at a rock show in Cody last summer standing by a guy that was doing a lot of IDing. A guy walked up with a semi-bright green stone and asked about it. He was told that it was Wyoming jade and it was worth about $300. The guy who owned it could almost close his hand around it and he was not letting anyone touch it and very few got to see it. He was acting like someone was standing in the crowd just waiting to hit him over the head and take it like it was a pink diamond. Jim

Mike because I found "black jade" I have researched the jade marketplace a little bit. All of this is for smallish "as found" pieces like that.
$10/lb for low grade blacks and uglier greens (California origin). Then there are many gradations from there to $50 a pound. The $50/lb stuff is quite translucent apple green material. It will have a pleasing color and eye catching quality. The actual shape comes into play for the buyers who carve or want sculptural eye pleasing shapes (specimens).
If your piece is jade it is likely somewhere in there. I'd feel comfortable offering my niece $15-20 a pound in a similar situation.
