Hi, I finally got my mojo back after some upgrades to my Genie. I installed a couple of sintered grinding wheels, a 60-grit and a 180-grit, and tested them today on some very hard jaspers. So far I'm delighted with the the change. The 60 is aggressive enough for pleasantly fast stock removal and the 180 is gentle enough to use for shaping precious opal. The cabs, top to bottom, are Willow Creek Jasper, Pink Imperial Jasper and an unknown from a slab I bought at a show. It looks a lot like Willow Creek but I can't be sure. Anyone recognize it for certain? Thanks for looking. Rick Willow creek Imperial Unknown

The one in the middle beats them all! Gorgeous!
I think the last one is also a sort of imperial.

Gorgeous cabs. And way too small for me to work with. Jim

Gorgeous cabs. And way too small for me to work with. Jim Thanks Jim. What size cabs do you like? I've been trying to cut smaller ones for jewelry use and have been choosing rough with smaller patterns. Some of the picture jaspers require really large cabs to show off the scenes. Rick

I make all sizes except for small although I have made a few small ones. I prefer rock at least inch and a quarter to inch and a half in one direction. I have made some up to three inches but that is getting pretty big. My daughter likes big showy ones but most women that I have dealt with or talked to prefer a medium stone. The cab that I just posted is jamesp's coral and it is three inches long but it is narrow and thin so it does not weigh much. I have not made one cab of a shape and size to fit in a setting. Everything I make is just what the stone turns out to be. If it is a slab I just cut out whatever I like and cab it.

Definately the middle one, but they are all superb. I have also been thinking about going a little smaller. You certainly didn't sacrifice pattern or "pop" in these little beauties.

I love Imperial jasper. Both the green and the pink, but I think the green is my favorite.
