So anyways a couple years or so ago I bought a collection that had a lot of faceting material and equipment. I sold all the equipment, I still have a lot of rocks left and no idea about them.
At any rate there were a couple boxes of books. I decided to keep most of them you never know what info you may find like I found a place not too far from here where pink celestite specimens are found and some of which are in the Smithsonian. I have yet to check it out but I will.
So i'm going thru this stuff and come across 'Faceting for Amateurs' 4th edition. I've seen earlier editions go for around $100-$200 or so and thought well i'll never facet my as well sell it. Well I don't know what's going on but if you can even find a copy of this book on the net it seems to be priceless, as in thousands of dollars.
What the hell is going on with this are all the sellers nuts or what? I'm not going to post my search on it I thought some of you may know about it or would like to do a quick search of your own and see what you find? I'm not complaining i'm just wondering what the heck is up with this book did they only print 10 of them? LOL.

I've got one of those books (since I'd like to try my hand at faceting someday), paid $25 for it at a rock show. It is copyright 1969, don't know what edition that would make it. And it is inscribed to someone, signed by the authors.
There is sometimes a wide chasm between what someone is asking for something online, and what they will get (or what it's worth). It sometimes seems pretty arbitrary.

It's my belief that the price has much to do with the authors, (Vargas), and the number of copies printed. Recently I ran into the same thing when I purchased the 1st book in a 3 book series by Roger Clark on Fairburn agates. it was a signed edition, and I paid in excess of $200.00 for it. I've been told that I got it for a very good price. If I were you, I'd hang on to the book for a few more years. It will only continue to go up in value.

Jean.......you have one of the earlier editions that are usually in the $50-200 range from what i've seen this one I think is 2003. You can't hardly find it anywhere and when you do it's $1800-$3000. I contacted one of the sellers and they said that's why it's so expensive.....because no one has it. Just for kicks I asked them if they'd negotiate and they said no.
Which reminds me this subject got me to looking at rare books and some of them are just insane pricey so I guess it's possible.
Good for me I guess, if everyone else wants $2k ill ship it the hell out of here for the first $1000.00 lol. There's a lot of serious facetors with a lot of money. I don't like the idea of holding on to it......something will happen like print more or whatever. I'm into buy/resell if I get something that's worth money, esp something I didn't buy to keep for myself, it's down the road as fast as possible.

Thanks, Rob. I started to read through it when I first got it, it's a little dry... Would make more sense if I was actually doing it, I suppose. While the information on cutting the facets won't change, some of the info is out of date. Like shellacing the stone to the dop stick. I suppose a lot of people use superglue now? This book is still considered the facetor's Bible. Jean

Rob, it is inscribed - "to Natalie. With best wishes for enjoyable faceting. Glenn & Martha"
It did not influence me when I purchased it... I had just heard that it was a must-have book for facetors.

there seems to be plenty of copies around. But everyone wants $1900 for it. perhaps rockncajun can chime in. I wonder if this isn't an auto-pricing anomaly. I saw it with a friends book. S/b $3 but someone priced it at $300 (by accident?) and the other sellers all went into the threes. The next day it was over $1000 for the book. A week later is was $3 again. I contacted a seller and he said the automatic pricing feauture in amazon.com bid itself up into the galaxy.
