I am gonna guess the second is also flash, while the first was not. The lighting was changed somehow in a big way. The second image washed out the windows reflected in the first and changed the background color.
#1 is better for showing your exquisite polish and #2 is better foe us to see the very delicate lilac color of the stones.

Rose de France is pale amethyst. Amethyst frequently has color zones. As the amethyst quartz crystal is being formed the presence of the impurities that give amethyst it's color can fluctuate and have higher concentrations at various stages of crystal growth. When oriented properly these darker zones will be in the shape of the crystal formation shape as appears to be the case in the lower stone of your second photo. These are called "phantoms". Any quartz crystal can have phantoms but they are especially pretty in Amethyst. A collection I purchased last week had some facet grade Amethyst, Rose de France, and Citrine of which some of the pieces have zoning and phantoms. If anyone has any interest in them I can post some small parcels in the Buy & sell section later tonight or tomorrow?

You got it right Scott. There was no flash in the first photo and flash in the second. This is the only difference. I took the photos right after each other. I took them inside next to my sliding glass window. I thought it was cool seeing the contrast in the photos
