Someone had a thread going where they were looking for a saw vise and I answered in the thread without book marking it or sending a pm so I could find it again. Well today I found a saw vise and rails without a saw so if you read this and are still needing one let me know. Tony

That was me Tony. I just need the vise, not the rails. I'm going to mount it on an existing sled/rail system that currently used a horizontal wood clamp system.... (Old Covington 20 inch). How wide does it open (i/e what is largest rock it will hold) and what are you asking for it?
Thanks Phil

Hey Phil, I will measure it tomorrow.
Does your saw have round rails or square rails? I found an old HP vise for square rails too. I am going to look at some more equipment tomorrow morning, I may have something else by tomorrow too.

Rails don't really matter. The setup I have already has the sled that rides forward and back, and the tray that goes side to side, I just need a vice I can mount onto the (yellow) tray. Thanks! Here's a pic. Phil

If it won't work for Phil I may be able to use the HP vice. The saw tubs I have would be more suitable for a 14, maybe 16 inch saw so the length of the vice, width of the rail centers, and side travel would be important.

Phil, By the time you mount the vise on top of that plate you will be so high you will severely limit your depth of cut. You would be better off keeping the horizontal vise and using a slab grabber or something as a "vise assist" so it will be easier to clamp it into the horizontal vise.
Lee, I think this is for a 20 or 24" HP saw, I will have to get some measurements and see which one.

Thanks. but that would be even higher. A regular vise that I can add will only add about an inch the way I want to do it.... Phil

Hey Phil, The base of the vise in the picture is 10 1/2" wide by 12" long and about 4" deep not counting the vise jaws. The jaws will open up to 10" wide.

Sounds like it was made for a 20 inch saw..... So, how much for the vise part minus the rails? another thought, how long is the whole thing including the rails and how much for the whole thing? Maybe I can remove the existing rails and sled and just put the whole unit in there.
Thanks! Phil

$200 for the whole thing. I can send all or part of it to you but once I cut it apart the rest is of no use.
The length is 35 inches. The end plates are 14 inches long and the rails are 9.5 inches from outside to outside.
Tony
PS- if it will fit replacing it with the whole unit is the way to go.

Let me check for fit as soon as it stops snowing. 3 inches so far and still coming down hard. It's not the snowing that I mind, it's the 35 mph winds blowing it around!

It warmed up today to +35, so I took off the cover and checked. Looks like it won't fit. So, guess I'll just be stuck with the horizontal vice set up, but am going to have a local shop make me a large "gator" jaw to replace the top board so the rocks won't move like they would with just wood top and bottom boards. Thanks! So maybe Lee will be able to use it. Thanks again, Phil
