I picked up this piece of petwood at an estate sale where most of the rock came from the PNW and Northern Rockies - not to say all of it but most of it. I thought the colors were very cool, and hoping their uniqueness may help with someone helping me to identify where it came from. My springer gave it the once over, but he didnt have any suggestions. Oh yeah, it is also feels less dense than most of the other p.wood I have. Anybody know were this stuff may have come from?

Looks a lot like Gabbs, Nevada opalized wood to me. Colors are right and opalized wood is lighter and less dense than agatized.....Mel

Cool - thanks Mel. I was not aware that opalized was lighter than agatized, good to know. Maybe I will take a little sliver off one side.... If this stuff is not common please let me know before I get too carried away with the saw. Cheers Andy

It's not that uncommon, especially in older collections. Used to be huge quantities there, even whole logs but last time was out there, it had been heavily collected and not a lot remained unless you did a lot of tough digging. Warning when you go to cut it. Opalized wood is much more brittle than agatized so it can be a blade breaker. Check for suspicious fractures, as it can really blow apart in the saw if fractured.....Mel

Thanks for the intel and warning, greatly appreciated. It looks sound, but maybe I will leave as a specimen for now. The colors are really cool and it shows nicely whole. Cheers
