Yep it's all true ! The possible bone thread as been moved!
Due to all the excellent I.D. advice I received and my own immutable powers of deduction I've decided the possible bone is indeed
BONE
In honor of that determination I'm moving the possible bone pictures to the Specimen Category where a probably proper bone deserves to reside Its positively bone mostly

What I'm holding is Thomsonite or Thompsonite depending on your dialect which I'm grinding on as were speaking I just posted that lovely picture of me...mostly because some members were discouraged because I hadn't posted the possible bone picture but its probably bone in the specimen section maybe ?

Gary(gr) cut me some slabs of Thompsonite that we scored at Rockazona a couple years ago. The matrix of this material is muddy with a loose bond. Hardly a 5 on the mohs scale…mostly. The actual matrix is a dark gray with small pieces of agate embedded in it. For some reason I keep thinking that this material comes from the ocean and the agates are actually shells. But I be wrong. mostly

Hey Ed, yes, that's Thomsonite in basalt matrix. Both the Thomsonite and basalt are soft. I have about a 40 lb. boulder like that sitting in my garage, along with lots of other chunks and some loose specimens. Most Thomsonite in the U.S. comes from Thomsonite Beach on the north shore of Lake Superior. There are no public collecting areas and the they're found on only about 1/4 mile long stretch. I collected some with my rock club this last summer from a homeowner who owns a section of the beach adjacent to the Thomsonite Beach Inn, which is the best known location.
We generally try to work the Thomsonites out of the matrix and polish them. It's very time consuming and difficult to get them out without breaking them. They're really beautiful when done properly!
Chuck
