Back in the 40's and early 50's when I was a kid there wasn't much aluminum around so we didn't get to experiment with it to our detriment. There was so much we could have learned pounding on it and melting it. Well now's my chance . . . come spring. I'm saving cans now, flattening them, X chiseling them to fit in a crucible. One can weighs 1/2 oz. How tall a 1" square will that make? I have some Duct Seal that I'm going to try casting in. There, I said it. Now I have to do it. Alloy Avenue is a good forum for metal casters, chock full of passionate knowledgeable people very willing to help with metal casting. Dave forget about cans, they are not worth the trouble, Cans, old window frames, sheet are all extruded and are a different alloy to cast. Old mower frames, motors, pistons, are easy to come by and cast really nicely.

I wondered if cast aluminum would cast better than bar and sheet stock like 2024 and 6061 aluminum.
I guess it started as cast and and be recast. This summer i may warm up some fire ants. Just to seek vengeance.

I guess it started as cast and and be recast. This summer i may warm up some fire ants. Just to seek vengeance. do it!!! I hope this helps. I did some math. I wanted to have a 25# capacity crucible for aluminum. 20# seems to make a fire ant nest cast and I wanted some extra room. Aluminum is 2.7 grams per milliliter. So it turns out I need 4.2 liters of aluminum. This is accomplished with 8" of my $10 scuba tank. I sold the valve off the tank on ebay for $6.50 so not my crucible is $3.50 in cost so far! lol

I missed getting a ladder off the freeway, fell off someone's truck and got crushed. I could not stop and it would have been far to go around and come back. 6' A frame ladder is gotta be 20#.
lawn mower engines are good too. Plus they are actually castable aluminum!

I doubt if the guy in the video will be using his curucible for long before it burns through and makes a mess in his furnace.
