the dude says he found it.
If it weights 600# and assuming 70% loss for cutting you would get 81kg of cabochons. If they average 5 grams each, then you would have 16,000 cabochons, sold at $1ea then... well.... you get the idea.
So, if you had a large cutting operation, what would be the price?
I am aware of a similar size hunk of amethyst sage agate available for less than this jasper. The buyer would need a drag saw to break it down into useable hunks. Not many of those.
Me? US$0.50 lb is high.

It looks like a big chunk of banded iron formation to me, especially with the last pic showing the bands. Hinckley is in the Iron Range, so the location is right. It's liable to be heavily fractured. BIF is abundant and not worth much.
Nice curiosity, but I wouldn't pay anywhere near that. His best bet is to try to sell it to a company that deals in landscaping rocks.

Yup, I agree with hardrock. Looks like jasper/hematite-jaspelite or banded iron, especially since it looks like it may be from that part of the country. That would make it overpriced as large pieces of that material are supposed to be fairly common.....Mel

Lets see..... Two hours per cab with a 8 hour day is 4 cabs per day..... 16000 cabs divided by 4 per days is 4000 days...... 4000 divided by 5 days per week is 800 weeks..... Two weeks per year vacation so...... 800 weeks divided by 50 working weeks per year is 16 years to cab it all up!!!!!! At Scotts dollar per cab thats 16000 cabs divided by 16 years is $1000.00 per year gross profits less rock cost, water, grit belts, polish, equipment etc. I knew there was money to be made in Lapidary!!!!! My question is? ? Where do I get a full time job with frequent overtime to finance this business opportunity? ? LOL

Never hurts to try, someone might want it.
I have a 600 lb chunk of Amethyst sage, Polka dot agate, Rainbow obsidian, or Opal Butte thunderegg that I will sell for $2000 if anyone is in the market for a big chunk!
