Can this material be scratched with a stainless steel point? If so I believe it is an argillite Picture Rock from Randolph County, NC. There have been several deposits of it found near the Randolph/Davidson County border and a few people have mined and sold this material. A friend and found a seam of it back in 1980 or '81 while out artifact hunting. We sold a good bit of it at the Spruce Pines Show that same year under the name of Louetta Picture Rock. I've heard of a couple of others who have mined deposits and tried to make a go of it making counter tops and table tops from slabs of it. The patterns in this material can be spectacular and it frequently has dendrites. Most of it is shades of brown and tan but I have found some with blue, gray and even a little with red. Most of it doesn't take a high polish but I did find that in the seam we dug there was a hydro quartz vein running through it and the material next to the quartz contained enough silica that it took a good polish. Ive also seen a similar material from Georgia that had broader patterns. I have some photos of some of what we found somewhere, if I can find them I'll post a link to them latter.

Can this material be scratched with a stainless steel point? Thanks for all the in depth information Quailriver. I will try to do some scratch testing later but I am guessing in the moh 5.5-6 range just by feel on the wheels. Chuck

Chuck's cabknobs. You always got something going on over there. Will those will be going with you if you ever move?
Would be cool if there are door knobs w/flat faces that you could grind to oval or tear drop or what ever and then glue a nice big fat cab on it to fit the shape like bluesy did her cabs. Or a half sphere...
I thought about offering (agatized)coral for people that live on the coast of Florida. They decorate in coral often. It would help if you market in upscale locations to get what you are worth. After all they are 'jewel knobs'.
My friend used to go to Brazil to buy Brazilian agate. One of the saw shops there had a contract to make agate tiles for a Japanese client. Like 30mm x 30mm and polished on the face. The order required two 40 foot oversea containers.
He told me about his trips there. 'Cutters' were every where. Family to giant operations. Some small lots had very high grade agate. Others not so. He had made contacts over 20 years and used to buy polished slabs in 55 gal drums (650 pounds) for 2-3$ a pound in oversea container quantity. I used to buy a few pounds in mixed A,B,C quality. I never have seen Brazilian agate like his. He said the chinese have been buying all the mines up and it is like $12 a pound now. What a life.

Will those will be going with you if you ever move? This was a custom order so they will ship out Monday. I only get a day to admire them. I did make a couple extras for our display. I have made them before for the desk and cabinets in our rock area too. Chuck

I haven't had much luck uploading photos directly to pages here so here is a link to my flickr page which I just added the photos showing a variety of patterns of the Louetta Picture Rock from North Carolina that I mentioned in an earlier post. www.flickr.com/photos/quailriver/

We'll done on the knobs. I'm a finish carpenter by trade and I always have customers asking me for knob recommendations. Maybe I can start selling some of my cabs!
