I'm still learning how to make cabs, I started with oval shapes because I read they're easier to make. Still getting the hang of it. These are the first two cabs I've made from material that I collected. I've got to work on the yellow one some more, the sides are too high compared to the ends. And, the red one isn't quite oval. I was just happy to get them through the wheels without finding huge scratches on them at the end step :-)

Always remember that thee is no law which states "Cabs have to be made this way..." or else most of us would be in lapidary jail!!
What oyu have are known as freeform cabs... cabs which differ from an actual template or were drawn by hand to start. As long as you are happy with the results and willing to strive to make them better, if thats even possible, then you are well on your way to becoming an addicted cabber... just like the rest of us!!
congrats on some nice looking cabs!!

Don't get too hung up about templates or particular shapes, let the shape of your rough and the patterns and how you feel at the time dictate what you do. Have a go at some crazy freeform shapes, its fun to just start with a slab or chip of stone and just let it happen. Those are good, Great work.

They look great to me, I especially like the red one. They both remind me of jelly beans for some reason.

Nice cabs! I also read that rounds may be easier to learn with; but I found shield shapes to be easier for me. If you are going to wrap the stones, I found that round stones are harder for me.

Thanks for the advice! I took a silversmithing class and I can make a bezel to fit anything. Still working on that was well, my teacher said you need to make like thirty bezels before you get the hang of it and I'm not even a third of the way there yet.

Those are beautiful! Is that bottom one pigeon blood or Carey plume agate? Either way, beautiful stone! Fran

Beautiful! And I'm completely jealous of your no-scratchy finish. Still working on that one myself.

My cabbing teacher told us we had to make 20 cabs before we could be considered for the advanced cabbing class... I made closer to 40 cabs before I felt ready to take the class!!

A new masterpiece is born !!!!!
