First off thanks for all the positive responses on my first Illinois Sampler post. What I have here is mostly chert as far as my limited rock ID skills are concerned. The colors are what I would call earthy and possibly unremarkable when compared to say an agate or jasper. When I picked this stuff up I brought home about 20# of it. Often the outside of the rock is oxidized and will be brown , red and yellow. When its broken or cut open , however, the most common color is a light grey with white and a little bit of dark grey. So out of the 20# I had maybe 12# went into the tumblers. I'd like to start with showing both sides of the largest piece from this batch Next a group of similar shades of brown and yellow The pieces here that show a shade of blue/grey I like Most of these have a pattern or feature I thought was interesting Couldn't resist a close up of these. Perhaps the best of the lot. A little bit of color and some other varieties. I love all things fossilized so I had to include this little guy. Thanks for looking and keep on rollin' them stones.

Nice looking batch. Your right a bunch of these are very similar to the flint ridge material.

I love that tiny little fossil! I like tumbling chert. It polishes up really nice. I've decided that it has to have banding to come home with me though, because the plain ones are just too plain. Yours look like keepers to me.

Nice looking bunch of tumbles! A lot of your material is almost identical to what we find locally here in Texas too. The dark stuff is very much lie what they call Austin Blue around here. Not really blue but mostly back with other colors mixed in....Mel

You have nice tumbles. Those are tough and they are local. That breccia looks a bit like Flint Ridge.
Great colors in the last photo. Cleaning rock up to get the best is common practice here too.

ill be in your neck of the woods next week in Mt Sterling, Illinois. Thought my class was this week. Next week. Would like to walk around the river while there but there will only be daylight for like an hour after I get out of class. Have to go back in later in the year. More daylight hours.
