Neat-O! While I'd be tempted to cut them I think I'd keep them as specimens.

Nice pieces, hard to find anymore in the brush. We like polishing the ends and saving the specimen aspect of them.

Oh wow. I love petrified wood, but that is hardly recognizable! I love how you can still see the bark patterns, thanks for sharing!

Pretty colors and patterns in those! I like them end-polished as specimens, too, but sometimes you get turtleback, nice dendrites or iris in those that makes slabbing irresistible. It's too bad, because the bark exterior rinds can be fantastic.

How about the best of both worlds, cut one slab off the end, face polish the end & make cabs from the end slices to display w/ the specimens?

Since I had a few sunbreaks today, I thought I'd grab pictures of a couple of limb casts that had iris effects... a couple of Crooked River limb casts that irised Somewhere, I also have pieces with turtleback and dendrites, but didn't have time to dig them out before the sun went back behind the clouds. I still usually like most of them as-is, or with just one end polished, best.

I have found about one in twenty limb casts from central Oregon will Iris. When you do find one that will Iris then you really have something. The Iris forms along the entire length and many Iris slices can be gotten from one limb cast.I had a two hundred pound pile that I went through a couple of years ago. I ended up with about 200 thin slices that show some Iris. Maybe some day I will try to polish them. Don
