I do not know if any one else is having this problem but please advise. I do believe Covington make excellent tumblers and I have used them for over 10 years and have barrels and machines in all sizes. So here is my problem.
On the 12# tumbler barrels I keep having the barrels wear thru just below the hose clamp. I make use the clamp is up as high on the rim as possible but again (last night) another barrel wore thru. What a mess to clean up. This is the third barrel in past three years. Covington has replaced one on warranty with no problem (great customer service).
Thinking of going back to Lortone Drums but I like the Covington.
Any helps is appreciated.

I spoke with a technician for Covington, and he told me that barrels will wear when extremely large grit, such as 16 grit is used. I have not experienced a problem with barrels wearing out on my Covingtons, but I use 60/90. I know some folks here might not like this, but I have had problems with Lortone barrels losing their shape and wobbling within a few days of use, which is one reasons I sold them. I prefer my Covington, because I also find Lortones to be too slow, in addition to the warped barrels.

I only use a starting grit of 60/90. All my 6# and 3# Covington Drums have never had this problem. Like Covington drums for fast action and easy clean but !!

I also had a triple-gallon Covington, which had the 12 pound barrels. I never experienced a wearing problem with that machine either. It ran continuously for two years. I guess I'll have to consider buying more Covington barrels. I spend a lot more on grit anyway. Do the barrels show any wear before they start to leak?
