Congrats on the purchase! Like giving in to the dark side ... now, forever will it consume you :-) Seriously, happy cabbing and slabbing!

Miander, I think I came up with an appropriate name.
She's large, green, and beautiful, so call her Fiona.

I seriously love that name! It's not strong, tough, intimidating or any other creative ideas that have came up. It's perfect, thank you XOXO

Congrats, miander! I love your Covington combo (definitely a lean green machine!) and workbench that your husband made for you! She's a beauty!! Imagine it weighs a ton? Will you be working on it outside, and when do you think you'll have your water system set up so you may use it? If there's a Home Depot or Lowe's close to your home, you could probably find the parts needed for a water system. Looks like you've got lots of rocks that you've collected that are waiting on you to slab, cab and polish 'em! Looking forward to seeing your work and hope you enjoy it!! I've never used a lever lock drum before, and wondered when you give the drum a spin on the machine, if you'll please let me know how you like it. This past Christmas, Santa brought to me your machine's little sister, the Covington 8" grinder/polisher, and I have a time trying to add/remove a belt to the expanding drum, especially the resin belts. Thought that maybe the lever lock drum would be an easier way to go? Hi Ginger, thanks for the suggestion for the water system! I already raided the garage and got what I needed and she's up and running! As far as the drum is concerned, I have not changed a belt on either type so I cannot give an informed opinion, sorry. I can however tell you that when I use it, I can feel the gap and I don't like it. I have been running the cab unit at a faster speed setting and I can still feel the bump. I am sure it doesn't effect the polishing, but it interrupts my cabbing "zone" and it interferes with my creative flow. Sorry I couldn't give you more technical feedback!

Miander, so glad that you liked the name! An easy way to refer to your baby.
When we go to the desert, my dog Lucy has a folding chaise with a cushion that she lays on. It came from K-Mart years ago, and is Martha Stewart brand. We all know it affectionately as "Martha." Even the dog knows what we are talking about when we tell her to go get on Martha, lol!

You'll never totally get rid of that bump on the split wheel, that's why we call them thumpers. Just make sure you pull the belt really tight from both sides before you tighten the lever.
You're running it at the highest setting? Big mistake.... slow it down to the slowest while you're learning... and even after. I set ours at the slowest and left it there all these years.
To work the thumper into your zen, just use it as the beat to a song, like stayin' alive or whatever. Treat it as a metronome.. Makes the time go by better....
Oh.. you think that borrowing the $$ from dad was your big expense... HA! Now you get to bankrupt yourself buying slabs and rocks to cut and polish. The equipment is the cheap part.... <G>
Most importantly, have fun!

I took some of your material to my local Rock club today and I got a lot of compliments! When I finish some more pieces from your fab material, I will post it so you can see what I've done with it

Looking forward to what you come up with. Please put some up and lets see them. The corals are hard material. May be slow to grind, but easy to take a polish.

jamesp just what does that big jack hammer jack? Must be rocks. For instance, mining limerock in flat Florida is ruining the ground water. So they have started a mission to get gravel from Georgia's giant granite deposits. This granite is safe to extract. And we have granite pits all over the place, like 20 stories deep. There is 4 quarries within 20 miles of my house. That hammer is used to break chunks too big to fit into the rock crushers. Here is a little portable unit. You can see them feeding it. But it can only handle certain size so they use a hydraulic hammer to reduce the over-size chunks.
