A big thanks to Daniel for the 7 $ to get shut of the ads from g***le.
Hmmm - im more chilled about it now after the initial shock of the ads being splattered into all your threads.
So Im thinking that we should see how things go for a bit and I'll stick the next months 7$ into it.

Thank you Daniel for starting this off!! I can toss a few bucks into the pot, I'll have to get a money order and mail it. The credits will just build up, like a savings account so you don't need to wait till next month to donate. Anyone who can toss in a few bucks, do so and it will be there for Mark to apply as needed.

Yes, even when they let the admin put the ads back at the top (sometime soon), we can still be shook of them.
I am not sure how this admin option to place the ads will work. Seems like all the admins would want to put them back at the top. I wonder if they are going to offer an incentive to those admins who keep them after the 1st post? OR charge some credits to put them at the top and then more credits to make them go away completely.
Who knows why proboards staff did their experiment. Maybe they were about to lose the g**gle account if they did not increase effectiveness, and they were afraid they would have to shut down. hard to know the full story.
I know ProBoards is a business, but so far I kinda trust them.

Good point Daniel, who knows if g**gle is putting the squeeze on proboards. I hope it was something like that to make them put the invasive ads where they did and not just that proboards is getting greedy.

Would not even have to be as sinister as a squeeze. g**gle and other advertisers/agencies have choices about where to purchase placement. These choices will vary in effectiveness in both clicks-on-ads, and follow-through-to-puchase. These #'s will fluctuate over time, but some sites will generally be better thanothers.
Site owners will generally try to know/monitor their numbers. This is no different from a newspaper or magazing that can tell advertizers their circulation, and demographics of their reidership.
If Proboards noitced their #'s were slipping compared to other sites, they could have tried this experiment w/o any drect influence from g**gle. Who knows, maybe they need to buy newer servers, and wanted to see if the new placement would let them charge more vor inserts.

let me see if i am following this correctly. Mark has authorization over the "pot" to use the credits as he sees fit to keep the board ad free? what happens if proboards decides to cut and run...could this happen? what would happen to this virtual "pot" then?
maybe proboards made this ad placement so annoying that a lot of the other boards would pony up cash too...playing into their hands, so to speak...
am i paranoid?

Yup KD!!!! But I think the way it works is that there is a set charge for a board- the more you want (or the less ads you want) the more it costs. As for PB making off with the pot- well yes it could happen- But you know they are like the government- they would NEVER DREAM of miss handling our funds!

I tend to think that the $7 figure is an average based on what they could charge an advertiser for an insert. Recall that is for 50,00 views (or inserts). Some boards, depending on the topic and size of membership may not be worth the $7. This board because of large membership and lots of hobby folks who need to buy supplies, might be worth more than $7. I guess it is possible that collecting the $7/month is easier (preferable) to marketing inserts to advertisers, but I think it is far fetched to propose they did the experiment just to shift more boards over into the pay-for-ad-free side of the line. I don't see proboards folding-up as they have tens of thousands of boards, and hundreds of servers. Still it could happen. There is no sense in keeping more than $20/$30 credit around. SO if it were noticed that the pot was getting large, then word could go out to throttle back the donating. I can't see a big conspiracy to get our $20 bucks. But, if ProBoards ever goes belly-up, all credits would just be lost. If you price out what some US company would want to charge for hosting a message board of this size/traffic w/o ads, I think it would be more than $84/year - maybe a little more or less depending on whether it came with storage space, and email account, and/or a registered domain name. IMHO Proboards is not very expensive for what you get. The servers are almost never down, searches run pretty fast, the message editor is sorta nice, they have a full featured set of message tags, and there is a well staffed and active support forum. They also allow admins to write scripts to do further customization. $84/yr seems very reasonable. I did a quick search and the best ad-free deal I found that seemed to offer comparable uptime and tech service was $6/mo. But, this one does come with some storage space, and a free domain, so it is a better deal the $7/mo - but not a lot. Powerful servers, specially administered to ensure greater security for Forum websites; 24/7 Technical Experts ready to assist you; Free professional installation of Forum software; No ads or banners on your bulletin board; Use password protection for your forum; Have multiple forums on your board; Stats about your visitors and posts; More Features: FREE domain, 250 GB space, 2500 GB traffic/mo, MySQL, PHP, FTP; Low Price: $5.95/mo only

Yeah, we did not get a full month. I guess we hit 50,000 page views first. BUt that would mean we had more like 200,000 page views a month. Can that be true?

gotta remember theres allot of guest traffic thats comes by to just read see whats new, so that adds to what we as members use ---the way it looks i think shain said it its gonna be close to 30.00 a month if we wanna keep out the adds --- i say ignore them and no matter what never click on them and see if they keep them there if we refuse to use the adds they post the accounts paying to have them advertised here will get the message --- i don't see anything wrong with posting them at the top this way if you see something cool you can click it but i for one will never use an add forced in between our posts --- ill prob get an attitude toward the vendor and not ever use them just for the intrusion
