Most of us have heard the age old expression, “Don’t judge a book by its cover”. Most of us are aware the same holds true for rocks. Here’s an example … If you were rock hounding out in the desert and stumbled over this rock, you may be inclined to simply kick it with your boot. Similarly, if I stumbled upon it along the Bay of Fundy, I may simply toss it back into the ocean for a few more tide cycles. However, for those who take the time, there is hidden beauty to be discovered. The following photos are the various faces of the same rock filmed under short wave fluorescent light. Perhaps if the 60’s were good to you, you have seen this all before in a dream. Want to learn more about where this rock is from, why it has different colours, why its location was once important, and how to photograph? Stay tuned for future posts. I promise cool photos and a story in every one. Money back guarantee! Just remember, you get what you pay for. LOL. Darryl.

Super cool Darryl - it's too bad there isn't a way to show the complexity in these rocks without the light...

Nice Darryl! Is that one of your finds, or did that come from rockncajun like the others?
What do you use for a light source and how careful are you regarding exposure?
Thanks! Chuck

Chuck:
No fooling you. I bought a 20 pound box from rockncajun a while back. It took about three weeks in the mail with international postage, clearing customs and rural delivery. Totally worth the wait!
For a light source I have an ULTRALight. It is a pair (one LW and one SW) of hand held lights that run on 4-AA batteries with a 4W, 5" tube. These small lights are intended for the hobbyist, or for field collecting as they are portable. I will include a photo for the curious in a future post.
As for safety, I always wear 99.9% UV rated safety goggles when working with SW. I also try to keep my hands back from the light to avoid an unintentional sunburn. I also practice this when using the LW. Although not as critical, I try to develop good habits.
Stay tuned for future posts. I have two more planned for this site. The next one will look into the history of the Princess Pat mine. The one after that will have a few Tips & Tricks for photographing, which is a little challenging.
Darryl.
