I received a Thumler's UV18 as a gift. I have some problems to resolve before I can begin using it but am glad to have them. I need to rearrange my work area a bit and have been doing so a little at a time before work. I'm currently not getting enough rock out of 60/90 to run it on a regular basis. I have done the math and even if I wait for enough rock I won't be losing any time per say and will be way ahead on grit usage.
My plan right now is to take some of my older tumbles and put together a test batch which I'll run the last weekend of this month or first weekend of next and then do the next step the following weekend. I want to do it on the weekend so it won't be unattended for 10 hours while I'm at work and still learning.
I have read the instructions for vibe tumblers thread 3 times now and have searched the board to read other threads regarding use of the UV tumbler. So as per my personality I'm armed with a lot of information going into something new. The questions I have are for the sake of clarity and any input is appreciated.
Q1. The amount of grit to be used is expressed in oz. That would be fluid oz.?
Q2. The instructions say to start the tumbler dry and then add water until grit begins to stick. Would it be okay to start it damp like a LOTO or should I follow the instructions to the letter?
Q3. One of the posts I read said to replace the hardware that holds the bowl and lid in place. A split ring washer to replace the star washer and a stainless nut to replace the steel nut. Sounds like a good idea. Any other hardware or mechanical checks/fixes I should do?
Q4. Instructions say that a few rocks up to 1&1/2 inches can be included. The size of the bowl leads me to believe that rocks larger than that could be done. If that is a correct assumption, how many and how large should I be able to do?
Q5. Last one . When tightening the bowl and lid how tight does it need to be?
