Anyone have an idea what this is? Found it today at the beach.

Itis not travertine; its not septarian; and its probably not a fossil (all of this is said with a question mark!). I may have its sister which I just glued onto a stub yesterday. If it still seems similar after I slice it today, I'll contaminate your thread even further. But it sure looks like you have a silicification occurring in some cracks. Acid test to prove its not calcification? Curious. Tom

Thanks Tom - your observation is a good one - there is transparent material in the cracks if that's what they are but I haven't scratched at it and I don't own any acid strong enough to be of any use. The pattern of the cracks just seems so random yet organized that fossil leaps to mind.

Common household vinegar is a strong enough acid to test for calcite.
It could possibly be tube worm holes, infilled with calcite. If so it would be considered a trace fossil.
