Hey folks:
We finally had a chance to do some rockhounding and hit up one of the shows (Vista, CA).
About three weeks ago, I took my boys up to Yermo, CA to do some rockhounding, then to Calico for lunch, and a short stint up to Mule Canyon for more rockhounding. Along the way, we stopped and took some pics of the M1's, M2's and M109's that the Marines were storing over at the Yermo staging area. Unfortunately, my SD card in my camera decided to corrupt and all those pics were lost.
I have a few that I took tonight of some of the stuff ... somewhat interesting. We came away with two buckets of agates/jasper and some specimen pieces of gypsum and some odds and ends that need to be windowed. Thought I'd share:
Gypsum crystals. Andrew and Nathaniel found a hill covered with these flat crystals. My photos skills are pretty poor, sorry...
Some items that Andrew and Nathaniel found.
This one needs to be cut, the agate isn't showing well in the photo and I "suspect" that this may be a bit like a thunder egg.
Down at the Vista show, we ran into Jean, Fish, and Christopher and picked up a bunch of stuff. I bought a bunch of fire agates from Christopher that need to be cleaned up for proper photos.
Agatized wood:
Iron Jasper (red streaks are supposedly iron ... it is really heavy):
Agate I purchased from Fish:
Andrew met an elderly couple who were "retired" rockhounds. They took a shine to him and gave him this interesting piece. It's got pyrite in some sort of matrix. It's really heavy.
Azurite and Malachite in Granite (from Pakistan):
Nathaniel picked up some small slabs and stuff from Christopher. It was a fun show and it was great to see RTH folks!
This weekend (yes, this thread is sort of wandering), Barbara wanted me to find a specimen piece we purchased years ago at the California State Gem and Mineral Museum up in Mariposa. After some digging around, I found it and figured on posting it, along with some other odds and ends that have been boxed for a bit:
Benitoite and Neptunite in matrix:
Paul Bunyan Agate:
Pyrite Flower (I think my Dad got this for me some years back):
Petrified Wood from AZ (2nd or 3rd Anniversary Vacation pre-kids):
Nathaniel and I spent an afternoon at Nevada Mineral and Book up in Tustin, CA, digging around, looking for stuff. Walt Lombardo is a great guy and always has interesting items in his collection. Great fun talking with him as well as he does his own collecting.
Uvite on Quartz:
Mimetite:
Cerussite on Barite:
Smithsonite:
FINALLY (thank goodness, you all say ... isn't this guy done yet???) I spent some of my tax return to pickup some new rollers for my tumblers (all have been down since Sept of last year) and figured ... why not ... so I finally bought it and an extra bowl:
I waiting to get it up and running as I've got an electrician swapping out my old panel for a new 200 amp panel and running two dedicated 20 amp circuits into my garage for the lapidary equipment. Woo hooo!
Anyway, thanks for hanging in there!
Paul
