Hello all. Can someone please give me some beginner's tips on identifying petrified wood (other than the obvious bark shaped pieces in a petrified forest) I'm having problems telling the difference between layered chert and pet. wood. Thanks.

Not sure about how to ID Pet Wood in the field as it is uncommon in the east. In order to get familiar with a new area, or a new rock, simply Google search what you are trying to ID and stare at LOTS of images.
If that fails, post your photos here for a member to ID. There's likely someone that can put an ID and even a location just by seeing a good quality photo.
Good luck.
Darryl.

Henry: It can be a bit difficult in longitudinal section. For me, it's much easier to tell wood from other materials when viewing a cross section as there are various ray patterns often evident. Hard to describe in words but many woods often have a layered effect when found in the wild that to me looks very much like water worn driftwood. Actually pet wood, in many instances looks patternwise, almost exactly like fresh wood in the lumberyard. Guess it's mainly a matter of experience.....Mel

Thank you both. I guess it's just a matter of studying photos and seeing/handling them in the field. I went to a local "rock shop" in Vacaville and saw some dinosaur fossil shards. They look like run-of-the-mill stones to me. I have no idea how can one tell.LOL
