I'm trying to identify this. I think it might be jasper. Any ideas? Test it for hardness by scratching with a knife. Does it scratch? Test it will a drop of pool acid. Did it react? In answer of your query. Maybe.

It also resembles the colors and textures of common nevada rhyolite I was seeing all weekend. Like Scott said try to scratch it and that will tell you a lot.

If you have an eye dropper, 1 or 2 drops of the hydrochloric acid is all you'll need. Personally, I think it looks like chert.

I tried the acid test and the rock stayed the same, except for some brown spots that were obviously dirt holes. They turned white. I cut into it and it is really hard, much harder than onyx, which cuts pretty easily with my drill. I posted a few other stones that I tested. The coloring isn't too good in this pic, but the upper stone is a deep burgundy/purple, and the lower stone is different tones of orange. I did find what I think was probably chert. It scratched easily and wasn't very hard. I think flint is supposed to be somewhere in between the two, chert and jasper. Thanks for all your help everyone.
