newly retired and now able to follow my rock collecting instincts to beyond the "pretty rock" stage. Moved from Central IL where we lived on the prairie on top of a huge moraine. when we retired and I had to leave my tons of rocks behind, but that's OK, There are lots of places to collect here in Alpena too, way more fossils and more colorful and varied stuff than on that old moraine. I have been lurking for the past few months and trying to learn all I can. Getting ready for my first tumbler purchase but in the mean time collecting for the future whenever I have the opportunity. Looking forward to learning from everybody. I'll have lots of questions. Right now I am trying to get all the varieties of green stones I find identified... oh man! And the many varied types of conglomerates, and tillites... and...

Welcome to the RTH forum....but it seems most here are still at the "pretty rock" stage. They just have differing ways to find what's inside....ways to saw, cut, tumble, polish, mount or display those purty rocks.. lol Some even seem to like to leave the purty rock mostly whole!...gasp! But folks here are friendly and helpful. There's tons of info here....I'm still trying to wade through a lot of it myself.

Hi Snowmom. I live in Alpena too. I do a lot of tumbling, so if you want to see what I'm doing, I'd be glad to show you. I can also show you some good places for fossils if you haven't found them all yet. As for other rocks, I get most of my tumbling rocks from the U.P., but there are a few around here too.

thanks for the welcome everybody. Jugglerguy, that sounds wonderful! I have been out and about, just found some interesting stuff along a local roadside, including some worn little pudding stone and some fossils. I don't have much saved up yet, my hunting is still in the infant stages. I could really use a local rock guru. Thanks so much!

Welcome from the shores of Lake Erie! Everyone here has been incredibly helpful and the base of knowledge and experience here is astounding! Good luck with the green rocks - and don't forget the moss agates. Gene

one of the things I really liked when I was first reading the posts in this forum was how helpful and friendly members were! you all are proving the first impressions. looking forward to the learning.. it is comforting to know rock collecting doesn't have to be lonely (reference to post about bringing up the subject at a party) thanks so much to all of you.
