I have a line on a Royal brand 16 in. slab saw that I’m told was recently rebuilt including a new arbor shaft and bearings but according to the owner it binds up and stops when cutting any rock bigger than a couple of inches in diameter. It’s in nice condition and has a newer slotted blade on it – I didn’t get to see the blade spin to see if it was spinning true or not.
I’ve known the man for a while and I trust him. He’s not actively looking to sell it but offered it to me for $100. I hesitate because I’m not familiar with the brand and I don’t want to bite off $500+ worth of problems on a hundred dollar saw.
What do you guys think is likely to be wrong with it?

I would hurry up and buy it! I have a Royal 18 and it is one of my favorite saws. Only a few things can be wrong, wrong RPM motor on feed screw, arbor needs to be aligned or dull blade.

I have a 16 inch Royal that I've used for years. Its now having the same problem. I know what the problem is and I think I know how to fix it. The threads are worn on the feeder clamp. Grab it. It's a cheap easy fix.

Royal saws were made in Portland OR. They are long out of business. Their saws are of a fairly simple effective design. I paid $500 for mine 10 years ago. It was heavily used and has not been rebuilt. I've spent 10 year using and abusing it. Best $500 I've ever spent. Emended if you have to take to a machine shop for repairs you'll come out way ahead.

When he replaced the arbor shaft and bearings I bet he didn't properly align it with the carriage. Not a super hard fix with basic tools.

Thanks guys. I think my brother is going to buy it - Saturday. I'm in the market very soon for my first larger saw - 18" or 24" and don't want to get derailed by a project before I get there.

We have a royal 16" and a homemader I am sure was a Royal kit saw, also 16". We have put many trouble free hours on both over about 16 years, really like them. We slab w/one and the other is set up for round stuff; t-eggs and such.

You'd be a fool to not buy it for $100. You could resell it for $500 as is and use that money to buy a bigger saw if you want. Or rocks lol. Of course if it's from a friend you wouldn't want to upset them.
