The Camelopardalid metor shower is supposed to make a show tonite...peak time is forecast to be between 1am to 3am CDT (Saturday 24th) possible 100's per hour rate....maybe... since it's the very first time this old rocky ball has passed through it. Look close to the North Star (Polaris) for it to show coming straight at ya.

My wife and I were talking about the shower and hoping for no clouds tonight. I said I hope it doesn't toss a couple big ones at us. Her response as if it was some sort of official announcement: "Gee, sorry, well it's a big sky out there you know".

Well...it's coming in low over the north pole...might be a show. Shouldn't be much big stuff in an old comet track.

The peak here in Arizona was around 1am. I only saw 3 but it was a beautiful sky. Up here in Wickenburg, we are far enough away from city lights and have a spectacular sky. Got to see the Milky Way and enjoy a calming night. Aint' God GREAT!!Sheri

Went out when the skies cleared here in south Texas. Had to wear a headlamp to make sure I didn't step on a skunk , coon or snake. Not a single dang meteor but the huge scarab beetles attracted to my headlamp every time I moved for a new view made me think a shower was in progress. Man them thangs fly fast and smack into yore noggin hard. Eventually got tired of the beetle rain and gave it up......Mel

Mel, I hear ya on them beetle things. I call them drug bugs. When Im out in the garage at night it never fails a few of them suckers will fly into me, usually the head. They fly fast. Then they fall and flop around on their backs.
Oh yeah, and I didn't see any meteors last night. It seems like its always that way. The experts always say a hundred an hour. I only see a handful per hour. Never really seen a meteor shower.
One time at least five years ago now. I was driving at night, just about to St Louis bridge and this huge orange flash went off. I mean the whole sky and surrounding area flashed orange like the end of the world stuff. It was crazy.
Then not long after I was driving and watched this neon green one flying for at least a minute in my view. It was pretty low too for a meteor thing. That was pretty cool. Havent seen anything like it since. Both them were pretty close in time frame.

bhiatt: Yeah, I've only seen one good shower while in the Sierras at our old ranch. It was a good one with the meteors going away from me and really showing trails. We have OX Beetles, Prionus and Unicorn Beetles here. Biggest are almost three inches long and sound like choppers coming in. Had one almost knock my glasses off last year it came in so hard *L*. Most common are the usually reddish Junebug scarabs. Much more numerous but only 3/4 inch long....Mel About golfball sized: About 3" long or so:

Mr. Mohs, Yep that is the Green June Beetle, also called the Green Fig beetle, Green Fruit Beetle and a bunch of other names. They love figs and ripe peaches. We have them here too and as a kid, we also use to make flying toys of then in Oklahoma. Dang mean kids anyway huh?......Mel
