Hi fellow rock lovers. I self collected this piece at the shore a while ago, and was pleasantly surprised by what I found. I just don't know what it is...

Looks like possibly root, cut on a diagonal.

Root to me. Why didn't I find that first. Guessing palm. Mel knows California root and palm very well. I hope he looks at it.

Definitely not bone and a little to regular for root too. Most root meanders all over the place. If it is fossil in nature, and it sure looks like that to me, I'd think maybe a longitudinal section of a fruiting body of some kind, maybe some sort of cone or bud. Could be some sort of cycad/cycadoid material too. Situation like this is where you need geological context re: what age rocks the specimen came from. For example, if from a California beach, most the sandstone rocks are Miocene but many of the quartz minerals are Franciscan Formation stuff which is, I think, maybe Jurassic in age. Might have cycad from one but not from the other except I think the Jurassic stuff is sea bottom in origin so not likely a lot of pet wood of that age.....Mel

Cycad would be cool. It sure is repetitive in pattern. Exciting find miander

Post a pic of the uncut side. That may settle weather it's cycad or not.

It's a very nice specimen & looks like it would make a nice cab. What are you plans?
