I am still working on recognizing agate when I see it and have come to the conclusion the term agate is subjective. I ran across this page in my searches for definitions of great lakes agates. I realize the person who posted these is only interested in one type of agate. Does your definition of agate include any of the stones included in these photos? If so, please point out which one/s and tell me why? I see some stuff in this ad which in other ads (on ebay etc) might end up being put up for sale as agate. comments and discussion appreciated. thanks! PS I have nothing to do with the person who put this ad up on the internet and in no way mean this post to be construed as advertising pro or con, I merely cite the pictures he has used as something that has fed my interest and piqued my curiosity. www.mnlaketreasures.com/not-a-lake-superior-agate.htm

Many of those shown are agates, just not Lake Superior agates. Here's an old thread showing several types of lakers skillfully tumbled by one of our members here.

That brings back a recollection of a customer I had last year. She told me she had a whole big bag of Lakers and wanted to know if I was interested in buying them or trading for them in exchange for making some rings for her and her Mom. A couple of months later she showed up at the shop with a a very heavy bag of rocks. We poured them out and started sorting through them and not a Laker in the bunch! She had a whole bunch of Granite and other assorted stones including a few thumbnail sized Unakite pieces. She was very disappointed she didn't have any agates, but she did end up having me cut and polish the nicest Unakite for her Mom as a memory from their trip

beefjello, thanks for the link. those are really exceptional agates! I think I would recognize a laker if I found one, or a peeler... I am having a hard time with the other types more likely found around here. Almost all photos show agates polished, very few rough.
