My husband went on a hike today in the Bishops Cap area of the Organ Mts, New Mexico. The spot is known to have flourite and quartz mines. We had found a quartz mine previously, but nothing too amazing. Boy did he do a good job today! I'm pretty sure most of it is flourite, I think the white stuff is Calicite? 0621141843 by kradzyniak89, on Flickr 0621141843a by kradzyniak89, on Flickr 0621141843c by kradzyniak89, on Flickr 0621141844b by kradzyniak89, on Flickr 0621141844a by kradzyniak89, on Flickr 0621141844 by kradzyniak89, on Flickr 0621141844c by kradzyniak89, on Flickr 0621141845 by kradzyniak89, on Flickr

The green and purple is, if not more of it, it all turns white if exposed to sunlight for about a half day. Fun to polish on a wheel, very soft. I've been tinkering with some the youngest son recently found in Nev.

Quartz, that is interesting about the color change. Anyway to stabilize the color so it doesn't fade? I'd like to try and cab some of it, but if it is just going to change to white, what's the point?

Beautiful finds! Too bad they fade so fast. Some flourite is more photo sensitive than others. I've seen these pink specimens that need to be kept in a dark drawer and only viewed in dim light or it'll fade in a couple hours, or little by little every time it's taken out of the dark. Really beautiful specimens but I don't see the point of having it if you can't look at it. On the other hand I've seen specimens sitting out on a shelf under a lamp that are still as dark as the day they were mined. Hope yours don't fade
