I found this rock in Lake Michigan, Michigan side. It is rather soft (softer than a Petoskey I would guess) and light. The stand is the natural rock pretty much looks as found. Polishes to a matte finish Sphere is made from same rock. Any ideas?

Certainly has all the qualities of marble although I was unaware of any kind of Michigan marble

I think they are right. We find big chunks of mixed travertine, mostly purple and white with a few black streaks off and on. Sometimes there are good sized chunks of white with a little purple... some of it is brecchiated, some of it seems like a nodule or something off the same stuff. So it comes in many forms. The glaciers did strange things tearing it out of the mountains in Canada and roughing it up all the way to the Great lakes (Superior,Mi,Huron in particular). I note your piece also has just a bit of purple, so I vote for travertine marble. when I look at the nice satin shine on it, it makes me think marble even more. marble "glows" it doesn't do high gloss.... that's why it is the choice of sculptors to carve human figures. looks more like skin that way. it really is a neat piece and it is becoming one of my favorites after having seen it a couple of times now. Find more and do this again! : )

Interesting. This has a two toned color mainly that the pix doesn't really show. Kind of a tusk white with a French Vanilla white/tan...with a little black in the mix. Thanks for all the input. Definitely looks like that marble you describe. Never know what you'll find! Very cool.
