One of my favorite materials. I have a couple nice slabs, but have been reluctant to cab since it's hard to find. I found a nice piece on ebay today. Here's a sample of the material.

Wowser! There's a material you seldom see around anymore and that's a beauty too. Like you, I've been hoarding my only two decent slabs. Just can't bring myself to cut them up......Mel
PS: Anyone know the discovery story or prospecting story on this stuff or on Howardite, another rare one on my list?

Beautiful Material and beautiful cabs! Something about them makes me feel nostalgic for the 1970s...which is not an easy thing to do! Larry C.

It's easy to find the story on Stefoinite. Google Rudy Stefoin. I don't know much about the history of Howardite. I was a big fan. One of Silverhawk's relatives was mining it. I emailed and the rough was $1.50 a pound. I emailed trying to get some slabs. I ran into the seller at a rock show in Reno and soon after it was $150 a pound. I've managed to get a few small pieces at a reasonable (current) price that I am saving. I've looked all over for something similar but have been unsuccessful. I normally don't collect slabs only cabbing material. This is one of the slabs I collected. It would be a shame to cut it. 7" x 2 1/4"

Beautiful examples of the two rocks I've had a crush on since I first saw them. I have never seen either in person, only pictures.

That's like something out of a Sci-Fi movie. Beautiful cabs!

Love that stefoinite, that is wicked cool! Picked up a slab of the Howardite at an estate sale a year ago. Also a slab of myrickite. I have a couple pics I'll post tomorrow from the desktop. Haven't quite figured out this tablet yet. Where's the control c? lol
Edit to add - Howardite
Myrickite
Will not be cutting either one of these, you just don't see them around too much. I got them at an estate sale in Pacific Beach, paid think $3 for a cardboard soda flat of slabs. May have had to buy two flats to get them both.

I made an offer (accepted) on a stefoinite heel, 4" x 3" tapering from 2" to 0. The only pictures were of the face so it was a little gamble. I should get at least 3 slabs of diminishing size from the piece. face: fat side: back:
