Had to go to Petoskey MI yesterday, and met up with somebody local who took me rock hunting right on the public beach at the harbor. It is just a little area but covered with rocks and very heavily picked. We were dedicated pickers, there in the pouring rain at 54 degrees, and despite rain gear soaked to the bone by the time an hour or so was up. We found 5 very small agates, two with bit of color. I brought one white one home and she kept the others. Fossils there were much more silicate for the most part, as is the media. I found Michigan's answer to Devils' Toenails, some pink scallop shaped shells in gray matrix. Lots of horn coral and just a bit of Petoskey stone, one piece of what appears to be Dallasite, a few green mottled stones and a few black with white that look like they will polish up interestingly. I suppose its a rule that every beach you go to is different. I was just amazed that we found so many agates there, even small, on a very heavily picked beach. guess the rain helped make them easier to see.
